The song is not an essential part of the movie's story at all, but most of us are glad that the song was added.
In the scene just before the song, Amar (Shah Rukh Khan) and Meghna (Manisha Koirala) are two strangers sitting on a desolate train platform waiting for their trains to arrive. It is a windy and cold night.
Amar tries to impress Meghna. He asks repeatedly if he could do something for her. She stays quiet for a while and finally requests a hot cup of tea. He rushes to a nearby tea shop and returns with two steaming cups of tea. By the time he reaches the platform, she is gone. He spots Meghna with some men in a train, which is leaving the platform. The song starts soon after that. This song is pure fantasy that works beautifully.
Amar and Meghna speak only for a few minutes before she leaves. They do not even know each other's names, and she leaves without giving any contact information. End of their love story? No, of course not, they meet again and again later in the movie.
